The original Killzone title, which has kicked off the successful first person shooter on the PlayStation 2, is now getting ready for a re-release on the current PlayStation 3 at the end of the month.

The Killzone series was supposed to be Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s extremely successful Halo franchise, but didn’t really take off in terms of popularity.

Fortunately for Sony, the series did find a loyal following, especially once Killzone 2 was finally released for the PlayStation 3 and after last year’s Killzone 3 cemented the franchise into the hearts of PlayStation fans.

Now, PS3 owners can finally experience the original game in the series, as Sony has confirmed that the title will be re-released on the console via the PlayStation Network online service.

This new version of Killzone 1 will be a straight up port, however, so don’t expect any HD features or textures, like with other classic games that are released in recent times.

It will be available on January 24 and costs $9.99 (€9.99).
