Microsoft has released a statement saying that it's going to take the Killer Instinct Xbox One project to another team, after it was revealed that initial developer Double Helix had been acquired by Amazon.

Killer Instinct for the Xbox One appeared right alongside the next-gen console with a few fighters and a bold free-to-play strategy.

Since then, developer Double Helix has released quite a few big updates for the game, to improve balance issues and add new features.

Now, after it was revealed that Double Helix had been acquired by Amazon, Microsoft has offered a statement to Polygon, saying that it will find a new developer for the game.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Double Helix and wish them success in their next endeavor," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We want all of our loyal fans to know that the Killer Instinct team at Microsoft is not changing and that the franchise will remain with Microsoft Studios. We remain dedicated to delivering a great experience and plan to announce our new development partner soon. We're excited about the future of this popular franchise."

As of yet, it's unclear what new studio will take the reins of the project.
