Microsoft has announced that a retail version of Killer Instinct, the Xbox One exclusive fighting game, is due out this September.

Microsoft and Double Helix's revival of the classic NES combo-based fighting game Killer Instinct is one of the incentives to own an Xbox One, as the game is offered as a free-to-play title, with one of the warriors in its limited (for now) roster available to play on rotation without paying a dime.

Iron Galaxy took over development of the title for its Season 2, and the boxed edition of the previously download-only game, titled Killer Instinct: Combo Breaker Pack, will hit shelves on September 23, with a retail price of $20 / €15.

The upcoming release will include all the content from the first season of Killer Instinct, consisting of eight different warriors, namely Sabrewulf, Jago, Glacius, Thunder, Sadira, Orchid, Spinal and Fulgore, and will also include a code for TJ Combo, a new character that will land when Season 2 debuts on the Xbox One, later this year.

The action-packed fighter has been a huge success on the Xbox One, and was also one of the highlights of this year's edition of Evo, the massive fighting game tournament.

Killer Instinct Season 2 is scheduled to hit the Xbox One sometime later this fall.
