Disney Pixar is introducing Disney AppMATes, a new line of toys that allows kids to use an iPad’s screen as a virtual play mat.

Featuring miniature Disney Pixar Cars 2 vehicles with sensors on the base of each toy, the Appmates toy line is recognized by a special application that Disney is set to launch in the App Store early next month.

The solution does away with cables or Bluetooth connections. Kids simply put the cars on the iPad’s screen and zoom through the various playgrounds presented to them.

“Simply download the free Cars 2 Appmates app from the iTunes app store, place your favorite Appmates toy character on the screen and play,” says Disney.

The physical toys will be available October 1st at U.S. retailers, meaning the iPad application will arrive then, as well. The toys will also be sold through Apple’s store, according to Disney.
