It seems that ASUS is once again busy with updating its laptop lineup. Having already made the official
unveiling of the Eee PC 1015PD Seashell series netbook, the company decided to follow up with another mobile PC, only of a different kind. Granted, one could say that the kind does not differ, since the newcomer is also a netbook, but it is still distinct by virtue of the fact that its target consumer base is different. Dubbed Eee PC 1001PQ, the entry-level mobile PC is aimed at children, mostly as an educational tool, and has already made its way to Europe.
The Eee PC 1001PQ, similar to the majority of netbooks currently on the market, has a configuration centered around the Intel Atom N450 central processing unit. This CPU has a clock speed of 1.66 GHz and, in this case, is backed up by 1GB of RAM. Additionally, the mobile unit comes with a hard disk drive, whose storage capacity of 160 GB should be enough for whatever files and documents may be needed. The machine also comes with the obligatory Intel integrated graphics, the 10.1-inch display (1,024 x 600 pixels) a 0.3 megapixel webcam and a 3-cell or 6-cell battery.
Since the CPU itself is not one of the newer Atom iterations, it does not support DDR3. While this puts it in the lower half of the market, it does not exactly impact on its intended functionality, since multimedia features aren't exactly required on an educational PC. As for what actually makes it appealing to humans of smaller ages, the Pine Trail-based laptop sells with a collection of stickers, for customization, and is available in two color options, Vibrant Gold and Flame Purple.
ASUS has already sent out the unit and European online retailer are already busy shipping it. The listing on Amazon.de can be found
here, and parents need only prepare roughly 229 Euro if they should wish to acquire one now that the back-to-school shopping season is upon them.
