It makes monitors and TVs look more like windows to another world

Immersing in a movie or game can be done easiest when people barely see the edges of the display, which is why cinemas are so popular.

This is also why hardcore gamers lean in very close to their monitors, regardless of the eye health risks. Provided they don't have oversized screens or multi-monitor setups.

Now, Woodenshark have posted a project on Kickstarter that will, perhaps, assuage some of this need for immersion.

Long story short, they have invented the Lightpack ambient backlight.

It is a small, open source device that needs to be mounted on the back of a TV or monitor.

The Lightpack ambient backlight detects what the screen is displaying and casts multicolored light on the wall behind it, creating the illusion of the image extending beyond the boundaries of the panel.

The system can be used in TVs, PCs, Macs, HTPCs, etc.
