Cybercriminals are leveraging the recent terrorist attacks at a mall in Kenya to distribute a piece of malware.

The emails analyzed by Symantec experts are entitled “Official: Kenya mall attackers Video” and they read something like this: “[LIVE] How the Terrorists Unfolded Attack at Westgate Mall Kenya and list of the victims! How Terrible! Warning! Graphic images. Click here to view & watch”

The links from the scam messages don’t point to any video. Instead, they take unsuspecting users to a hacked website that’s set up to serve a piece of malware detected by Symantec as W32.Extrat.

The malware is hidden inside a file called “Kenya terror Video.exe.”

To avoid falling victim to such attacks, refrain from clicking on links or attachments included in unsolicited emails. Also, make sure an antivirus is running on your computer, since in most cases, it can detect such malware.
