Kenya loses a total of more than $23.3 million (€17.2million) every year due to cybercrime. This is why the country’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has decided to launch a new unit that will handle the prosecution of cybercrimes.

According to IT News Africa, the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko says that his office will also review existing legislation related to the prosecution of cybercriminals.

Tobiko admits that current laws are inadequate, which is why the ODPP has organized a workshop to review current legislation and draft a comprehensive cybercrime bill.

In 2013, cyber security experts predicted that Africa would be increasingly targeted by cybercriminals because the continent lacked proper legislation. They’ve warned that Africa offers a lot of opportunities because of the expanding Internet infrastructure.
