IceClean was created to help Mac users solve maintenance and optimization problems using built-in Unix system tasks. This way, users ensure their Macs work at optimum efficiency and also keep them running as smoothly as possible.
TUAW points out that there are a number of UNIX System Tasks which can be set
to keep your Mac running "at peak performance." However, many Mac owners hate the idea of having to pop open the Console or Terminal and start typing with trembling hands, afraid something might go wrong. This is where IceClean steps in; and it even provides a clean UI (user interface). This is helpful solely because it offers menus for OS X Maintenance, Cleanup, Security and Network, and Utilities. These, in turn, all have their respective menu choices and keyboard shortcut equivalents, which makes maintenance a breeze.
IceClean lets you execute the following tasks:
- Periodic routine scripts
- Verify preference files
- Repair permissions
- Run periodic scripts
- Update prebindings
- Remove user and root cache files
- Update Locate & Whatis databases
- Rebuild LaunchServices
To get a better picture of how this software can be of some help to you (by the way,
it's totally free), if you want a System Cleanup, you can remove root & user system caches, perform a deep Safari cleanup or a font caches cleanup, remove Safari icons, remove log files (yeah!) and even remove .localized & temporary files (double yeah!).
According to MacDentro, Version 3.0 is now completely renewed in Scripting and Cocoa Interface, which can improve and speed up tasks managing of All Unix Power. The integration with the Sparkle framework assures IceClean is constantly up to date.
Note that you shouldn't force IceClean to quit (don't apply "force quit" on this application) as it could be "seriously dangerous for your system," developer MacDentro warns.
IceClean requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later. It is a Universal Binary, which means you can run it on both PowerPC and Intel-based machines. Click
