Facebook has worked itself into every part of the web and few can afford to ignore it anymore. Most companies, organizations, brands, bands and so on have a Facebook page and it's an important way of making yourself available where your fans, users or customers are.

Facebook offers a rather comprehensive analytics tool with Facebook Insights, but that's not much use for checking what the competition is doing or which are the fastest rising pages of the moment, in the hope of learning a lesson from them.

This is where a new site dubbed SocialMedia-live comes in. It keeps track of close to 38 million pages and offers detailed and, more importantly, near real-time statistics on many of them.

Because of the problem’s scale, the site only tracks some 90,000 "World Leading Pages" at a 10-minute interval. These pages are deemed to be the top 3,000 pages in the world in their respective category. There are 30 categories.

Another group of some 1.8 million pages is checked twice a day. These pages have more than 1,000 likes. The rest are checked only once every five days.

"You want to know what is happening on millions of FB pages ‘right now’? Which pages saw the greatest fan growth over the last hour, who are the most interesting newcomers? Which brands, musicians, athletes, politicians, etc. are accumulating the most fans among users, which known and unknown pages are shooting to the top at this moment?," the site explains the reasoning behind it.

It is still labeled as a beta, so some things may change and there may still be some issues from time to time. There also doesn't seem to be a way to search for pages and navigation in general is a bit convoluted. But for those interested in this type of stats, it may prove a valuable tool in the future.
