The big game is over, and the Sharks are back to work

Katy Perry was the Halftime performer at the Super Bowl 2015 but her two backup dancers from the “California Gurls” segment, dressed up as two giant blue sharks, came very close to stealing her thunder, particularly the left one.

It is now a celebrity on its own, Left Shark, a viral star and a meme, and has even been turned into tattoos, on the body of those who believe its fame is more than a flash in the pan.

And all Left Shark had to do to become this famous was to miss its cue in the routine and then be forced to improvise as he tried to catch up.

When one guy from Orlando, Florida, announced plans to include Left Shark in his line of 3D figurines and thus turn a profit from the frenzy on social media, he was immediately shut down by Katy Perry’s attorneys, who warned him that selling those figurines without the star’s prior consent was in violation of her copyright.

We now know why Katy was being so protective of the image of the Left Shark: she wanted to make money herself from this. ESPN has released a commercial for SportsCenter featuring both sharks. You can see it in full below.

“Halftime is over and it's time for the sharks to go back to work,” reads the description, which also credits Katy, Baz Halpin and Marina Toybina with the creation of the shark costumes.

Those who appreciated the fun had online over Left Shark’s out of synch routine will certainly appreciate the joke that no one probably noticed just how bad it was.
