Katy Perry is featured in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine that is bound to get hearts racing for a very simple reason: she’s wearing nothing much besides a swimsuit and, in some shots, only a pair of fishnet stockings. Though she may not look it, the singer grew up in a very strict environment, she says for the magazine.

She also believes in God fervently and is offended when anyone takes His name in vain, which is why she was so revolted when Lady Gaga’s video for “Alejandro” dropped and she took to her Twitter to call it a blasphemy and compare it to a comedian telling fart jokes. Asked to address talk that she’s a hypocrite for failing to see the same flaws that she pinpoints in Gaga in herself, Katy elaborates – and even explains the song that brought her international fame, “I Kissed a Girl,” and how it fits with her religious upbringing.

“I wasn’t ever able to say I was ‘lucky,’ because my mother would rather us say that we were ‘blessed,’ and she also didn’t like that ‘lucky sounded like ‘Lucifer’,” Katy says of her strict upbringing. Of believing she was about to become a star at 17, when she first tried her hand at a singing career, she says, “I was in Beverly Hills with my new Jetta, thinking that my album was about to come out, and I was so excited. Then nothing happened. It was like, ‘Wow, my car’s getting repossessed, I have no money, and I’m living on Cahuenga, under the Hollywood sign’.”

As for that comment that got her so much negative media – that Gaga’s video for “Alejandro” was blasphemy – Katy seems to urge the world not to jump at conclusions and see the difference between her “I Kissed a Girl” and the other video. “I wrote that tweet because of a combination of things. I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord’s name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth. I think when you put [sensuality] and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen. Yes, I said I kissed a girl. But I didn’t say I kissed a girl while [expletive]-ing a crucifix,” she explains.

Even though she comes across as frank about everything, the Rolling Stone interview may have actually gotten Katy in hotter waters than she was before, buzz online seems to indicate. As noted above, the spread that comes with the interview verges on the naughty, which has prompted many to ask the all-familiar question of “WWJS (What Would Jesus Say)” about it.
