All is not well in the world of Katy Perry and celebrity boyfriend John Mayer. Just last week the couple sparked engagement rumors when Katy was spotted wearing a ring on “that” finger, but now they've gone completely pear-shaped since insiders are claiming they have since split up.

This is undoubtedly an unexpected turn into what seemed to be a relationship heading for the altar, with numerous reports coming that the two singers were already planning their nuptials as a surprise for their guests that would have been flown to Hawaii.

So what actually happened? The answer to this question might be as elusive as the finding out who shot J.R. But E! claims that it has it on good authority that Mayer and Perry are no longer a couple.

Details are scarce at this point, but the only solid piece of evidence the media has is the fact that Perry oddly decided to go solo on her recent trip to London and Milan, from which Mayer was suspiciously absent.

This isn't the first time the two have parted ways, after another break-up late last year proved Perry was still not ready for a commitment since her split from Russell Brand. Perry returned from her European trip on Friday, and now the paparazzi are waiting to see if she makes her next appearance with or without Mayer in order to give out a final ruling on their relationship.

The reason for this unexpected move is that nothing hinted things were going bad for John and Katy. They seemed to be head over heels as they went out for dinner in Los Angeles for Valentine's Day, which was also the time Katy's ring drew attention.

Last year, in November, Mayer and Perry decided to celebrate their rekindled love with a duet song and a video called “Who You Love,” which featured the couple riding a mechanical bull in slow motion. The song was introduced on Mayer's latest album “Paradise Valley.”

Of course, there were voices saying that Mayer was just using Katy to reignite his musical career, and that their hook-up was merely a publicity stunt, but her family and friends gushed over their romance and claimed that they were getting along perfectly and would soon wed.

One reason for their split might be the differences in career success. Katy is hot on the heels of her latest hit “Dark Horse,” a horse which rode quickly through the charts, while Mayer seems to lack the same momentum to breach those high positions in musical tops.
