Pre-orders started today, but celebrities already have it

It pays to be a celebrity. Literally so. Whenever a new, highly anticipated product is released on the market, a handful of celebrities, acting as unofficial ambassadors of the brand, get it first, before everybody else. The same is happening now, with Apple’s famous Watch.

Pre-orders for it started today, but regular folks won’t be getting it earlier than April 24. Katy Perry, on the other hand, has already received hers and she’s boasting about it on social media.

However, it’s the way her fans have responded to it that’s most notable, either scolding her for flaunting her 1% privilege in their face, when she could only afford to buy the Watch because they paid for it, or cracking mean jokes about her arm hair.

Katy and the Watch, the fans and a point well missed

The first Instagram post available below is from Katy’s official feed: she posted a photo of her hand, wearing the Watch, over her fishnet-clad legs, with the caption, “Oh Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey!,” which is actually one of her favorite songs.

Naturally, when you’re someone as famous and as adored as Katy Perry, you don’t have to do as we regular folks do when you’re trying to get attention on your new purchase, i.e. post a photo of it with an over-excited caption along the lines of “heeeyyyy guys, look what I gotttt!!!!!!”

So she doesn’t even mention the Watch, which could make the post about anything from her fishnets to her chipped nail polish, her rings or even her belief that a woman is as beautiful with a bit of arm hair as she is without.

So her fans made sure to comment about all this: some love her rings, others think they’re ugly because they’re chunky; some criticize her for not getting a manicure, others praise her for rocking a certain grunge vibe; but most hilariously, some comment on her arm hair, cracking jokes about it, both on Twitter and on Instagram.

Recent months have seen a surge of feminist campaigns meant to raise awareness on the issue of bodily hair and how it should not be a topic society gets to decide on, but every woman individually. From ladies dyeing their armpit hair in neon colors to ladies posting photos of their hairy legs, the goal is to tell the world that the idea that women should be as hairless as children is old-fashioned and unnecessary.

The reactions to Katy’s post back it up.

You’re rich, we get it!

Fans also took issue with Katy for claiming bragging rights for owing a Watch when her fans will have to wait for weeks until they get theirs - that is, assuming they can afford it.

The fact that she got the gold Apple Watch Edition, whose pricing starts at $10,000 (€10,000/£10,000), only made this for fans a pill harder to swallow, even for those who realize that maybe she didn’t pay a single dime for it. Because, remember, it pays to be a celebrity.

She’s not the only celebrity to show off her latest acquisition: Pharrell Williams sported one on the latest episode of The Voice, and Drake showed it off in his first Coachella picture. As a side note, no one said a peep about their manicure or arm hair (or lack thereof).
