For those who have been wondering why exactly is Katie Holmes keeping such a low profile in terms of acting, the November 2009 issue of Elle magazine, the Women in Hollywood edition, may offer an answer. It’s not because movie studios no longer want to have to deal with her because she fails to sell at the box-office, as some have speculated, but because staying somewhat away from the spotlight is a choice Katie herself made when she became a mother.

Holmes is married to Tom Cruise, as all fans must know by now, and together they have an adorable baby girl, Suri. Ever since the two started dating, rumors began to make the rounds as to Tom forbidding Katie to pursue her acting dreams because what he was looking for in a woman was wife-material (in the old-fashioned sense of the world), and not someone who would be away from home most of the time. However, things were never really like that, Katie explains for Elle.

As the actress herself puts it, it’s wonderful to have the opportunity of putting some of her life experience into the characters she plays, but that never comes first in her life. The things that matter the most, instead, are being a mother and a wife, taking care of her family and spending as much time as possible with those she loves the most. Career comes second, she explains. “In my own life, my whole world really revolves around family. I do what I need to do, but it’s like, ‘How is everybody else doing?’ And it’s wonderful for me as an actress to put some of that into a character.” Katie adds.

Even when she agreed to do “All My Sons” on Broadway, Katie spent most of the time together with Suri, whom she used to take with her even to her dressing room where she was getting ready to get on stage. “Suri would sit in my lap in the makeup chair. She’d hand the wig lady the bobby pins.” Katie recalls about the experience. Still, it could very well be that Holmes’ love of her life remains – aside from Suri and Tom – the movie world.

“It can be any genre. I even like vampire movies – they just have to be well done. I want to believe in the characters. The minute it starts to feel not real, I’m not interested.” Katie explains for Elle. For the full interview with Katie Holmes and more quotes from other female stars, see here.
