Kathy Griffin says having a body like hers at 50 is not impossible, but requires a lot of work

At the recent VH1 Divas Salute the Troops event, Kathy Griffin did more than just get Bristol Palin all upset over a fat joke: she also flaunted her toned body in a two-piece, military-style swimsuit.

The comedienne has never made a secret of her struggle to meet beauty standards in the industry, which has seen her battling depression and succumbing to obsessive plastic surgery.

In recent months, though, Kathy has gotten her confidence back which allows her, at 50, to get up on a stage in front of a live audience in nothing but a revealing swimsuit – and still look amazing.

People magazine spoke to Griffin about what she does to stay in such incredible shape and, not at all surprisingly, the star says she works out a lot whenever she can.

“First of all, I work a lot,” Kathy says. “Running around onstage making fun of celebrities is a workout in itself!” she adds in her usual manner.

On a more serious note, Kathy reveals that her body needs more work now that she’s older than it did when she was, say, in her 20s but that’s not to say it can’t look just as good as it did then.

“Second, I ‘werk!’ At 50, my body can’t handle the junk food or sporadic work outs like when in was younger. I eat much healthier. I work out with a trainer & hike or jog a few times a week,” Kathy says.

In an interview of a year ago, Griffin stressed that a body like hers came with a lot of sacrifice, which mostly meant abstaining from unhealthy cravings and putting in the extra work at the gym no matter what.

On the same occasion, she also said that plastic surgery was not the answer – and she could tell that to any woman in the world from her own painful experience.

“Staying in shape is a struggle. I struggle with it every day. I just came from a very healthy lunch but the whole time I was having the healthy lunch I wished I was having cupcakes. It’s not a simple thing,” she said back then, as we also reported.

“I have to watch what I eat and I have to work out quite a bit. The funny thing is the lipo, which was more than 10 years ago, has nothing to do with it. I actually got into fairly good shape from yawn: diet and exercise,” Griffin added.
