The 3.6 version of
KateOS is now available, after the development team worked for no less than eight months. It is developed independently and free of charge as a light-weight Linux (based on Slackware) distribution targeting the intermediate Unix users by combining popular Open Source software with its own original programs.
This edition contains many updated packages, lots of bugfixes and improved solutions. Some of the new features in KateOS
3.6 are:
■ Software-driven system hibernation
■ A GUI installer (included in the LIVE edition)
■ A new version of update-notifier
■ New startup scripts which are accessible via the service command
■ Better support for HP printers (via hplip)
■ Internationalization support in the whole system (using gettext)
■ New French translation of the CORE installer and many system components
■ A new GUI network configuration tool
■ Simplified CORE installer
■ Several new packages such as Audacious and Pidgin
■ initrd has been replaced with initramfs
The CORE version will be available on three CDs and the LIVE edition will have a graphical installer. Also, for the advanced users who want to make their OS from scrap there's the Miniiso edition, which contains just the basic set of packages (those needed to boot the system and configuring the network). The DVD version has KDE and GNOME desktop environments included.
The goal of KateOS is to combine the advantages of desktop, server and general purpose distributions, by offering stability and efficiency. It has low system requirements, an increased security, and support for common multimedia. This project was founded at the end of 2003 by Damian Rakowski, who is still leading it. He took the decision to give Long Term Support (LTS) for all new releases, on a time period of two years. Users are advised to update the operating system, by using the
"updateos" command, to newer versions of the distribution.
