Alexander Gostev, Senior Virus Analyst, Kaspersky Lab observes that the malware tendencies for August fall in with the general stagnant trends of the phenomenon, but also draws
attention on a consistent[ADMAK=1] number of malicious items that have found their way into the ranking. "The email Top Twenty is based on data generated by our antivirus which is placed on several major email servers, and reflects the number of malicious programs intercepted and deleted. However, the online statistics relate to the computers of individual users, who may not have an antivirus solution installed. Because of this, the collection of malicious programs detected is often rather random," explained Gostev.

Kaspersky's top 20 malware podium is occupied by email worms with Win32.Mydoom.m at the head of the list fueled by a detection ratio of 4.93%. Rounding up the second and third positions are Win32.NetSky.q and Win32.Nyxem.e with 0.74% and 031%, respectively. In this context, Gostev noted that the company's online scanners have witnessed a decrease in the email traffic associated with Netsky.q. In fourth place, the Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.asl has experienced an ascendant trend in spite of the loss in percentage.

"The last two places are occupied by programs which, logically, are misfits. However, it's quite possible that they are closely connected to Backdoor.IRC.Zapchast, which was mentioned above. If this is the case, then their presence is entirely logical. However, the presence of Ramen, a Linux worm, in 16th place, is strange. Although it's the most widespread malicious program for Linux, we've never seen in it such numbers before. It will be interesting to see how Ramen performs in September," concluded Gostev.
