IT security giant Kaspersky has published its spam report for the third quarter of 2013. The report focuses on malware, spam and phishing.

As far as unsolicited messages are concerned, pharmacy spam continued to land in inboxes. Spammers used various tricks to evade filters. Cybercriminals leveraged news about the royal baby and Edward Snowden to distribute malware.

The percentage of spam in total email traffic decreased by 2.4% compared to the previous quarter. 3.9% of all emails contained a malicious attachment. China, the US and South Korea continue to be the main sources of spam.

Unfortunately, the percentage of phishing emails has increased three times compared to the second quarter of 2013. Most of these malicious notifications exploited the names of social networking websites.
