IT security giant Kaspersky has released its spam report for October 2013. According to the company, the percentage of spam in email traffic increased by 6.6%.

This isn’t really surprising considering that holidays such as Halloween always represent a good opportunity for spammers. In addition, Christmas-themed spam has also started making the rounds.

Scammers leveraged the conflict in Syria in an effort to trick unsuspecting users into sending them money.

In October, China continued to be the number one source of spam, followed by the US, South Korea, Taiwan and Russia.

It turns out that 0.027% of the global spam traffic observed last month represented phishing emails. Social media websites continue to be the most targeted, followed by email and instant messaging services, search engines, and financial companies.
