In order to protect Windows PCs on mixed networks more effectively, Kaspersky Lab has released Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac OS X. The new product has access to the company’s global antivirus database that includes information on more than 20 million malicious programs for several different platforms.

“Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac has been developed to meet the specific security requirements of Mac users who know the value of the data stored on their computers, along with the need to keep them running smoothly,” Kaspersky says.
“As one of the most successful specialist software security companies in the world, you can trust Kaspersky’s award-winning technologies to protect your music, photos, files and sensitive information, and prevent you passing malware threats on to friends and colleagues when exchanging information with other types of computers,” the company states on its website, where the key features are listed as follows:

- Real-time scanning of files, Internet downloads and mail attachments;
- Includes latest Kaspersky antivirus technologies for better protection;
- Fast and non-intrusive with only 1% CPU impact on your Mac performance;
- Familiar Mac-style appearance and operation;
- Special safeguards to prevent Kaspersky Anti-Virus from being compromised;
- Automatic regular and emergency updates for always-on protection;
- Prevents you passing non-Mac threats on to friends and colleagues using different types of computers.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac also boasts the Growl notification service support, the ability to lower CPU consumptions to as little as 1% when idle, an option to choose the application-icon location (menu bar or dock), the possibility to enable a sound notification if malware is detected, and more.

Requiring Mac OS 10.4.11 or higher, Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac also needs an Intel processor, 512 MB of RAM and around 80 MB of available hard drive space to run. An Internet connection is also required for product activation and updates. A one-year license costs $59.95 to buy.
