The Karni Mata Temple in India is an important and beautiful Hindu site made of marble and solid silver doors. However, tourists are not attracted by its architecture, but by the thousands of rats that inhabit it.

According to the Mirror, the disgusting creatures live in luxury because the natives believe they are an incarnation of Hindu goddess Karni Mata. So, more than 20,000 rats live in this Indian temple.

The rodents can roam free at the Karni Mata place of worship, as there are special holes and tunnels around the building to facilitate their movement. A wire net placed over the courtyard protects the rats from birds of prey.

Pilgrims are anointed with ash before entering the temple, because packs of rats run over their feet.

The rodents are considered to be deities and people even pet them and pray to them when visiting the temple.
