Karl Lagerfeld may be all kinds of things but he’s also an extremely amazing interview subject. The Chanel fashion designer sat down for a talk with M Magazine, offering a fresh set of gems in the process.

After causing some headlines for his criticism of Pippa Middleton and Adele, Karl goes after a very popular item of footwear, perhaps more popular than many style gurus would like: flip-flops.

Unlike style arbiter Leon Talley, Karl can’t stand “sloppy” footwear, the kind one wears when one needs to feel at one’s most comfortable.

“I hate sloppy footwear. What I hate most is flip-flops. I am physically allergic to flip-flops,” he says, as cited by Fashionista.

Unkle Karl, as he’s sometimes dubbed in the press, also hates hats and tattoos, though perhaps not as bitterly as he hates flip-flops.

“I think tattoos are horrible. It’s like living in a Pucci dress full-time. If you’re young and tight, maybe it’s OK, but…,” he says.

Hats too are something he would never dream of wearing, and the world famous designer blames his mother for his aversion for such accessories.

“The other thing that doesn’t work on me is a hat,” he says.

“I love hats, in a way, but when I was a child, I’d wear Tyrolean hats, and my mother – I was something like eight – said to me, ‘You shouldn’t wear hats. You look like an old [expletive].’ Do you say such things to children? She was quite funny, no?” Lagerfeld asks.

In the same interview, which is totally a must-read, the designer talks about his ponytail, how he never weighs himself because a Dior Homme suit is the best indication of a few extra pounds, the reason he always wears fingerless gloves (they make the hands longer, apparently), and how he never really wanted to make money.
