Karl Lagerfeld has just created the ultimate fashion statement, an accessory that is at the crossroads of fashion and jewelry, a collar made of black diamonds and a gorgeous emerald as a center piece.

The design is worth a whopping $45,330 (€35,979) and will go on sale shortly. Before that, it will be one of the items on display at the Brilliant diamond exhibition, which takes place between June 28th and July 4th.

Apparently inspired by a dog collar, the unique design is made of 40 carat black diamonds and has as center piece a gorgeous emerald set in black rhodium-plated silver, Marie Claire informs.

The emerald weighs in at 23.33 carats – and now we know why the piece is called Masterpiece London.

“I'm renowned for my love of a high collar and I wanted to create a true collector's item with this one-off piece,” Lagerfeld says of the design he created specifically to have it in the exhibit opened on the occasion of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

“Merging the masculine with the feminine and uniting the world of fine jewelry and high fashion, to me this collar is a work of art and a real show-stopper,” the designer says.

As Marie Claire also points out, Lagerfeld isn't exactly a stranger to excess, since he most recently made headlines for owning a kitty who has 2 personal maids who keep a diary of her activities whenever the master is away.

Carol Woolton, curator of the exhibition, notes that Lagerfeld's piece will go on display together with some of the most beautiful, antique and valuable diamonds in the world.

“This was a way to add contemporary diamond design into the fair,” Woolton says of the inclusion of Masterpiece London in the exhibit.

“Diamonds have something magical about them - it's hard to define, but you recognize it when you see it. When this magic and ephemeral sparkle is combined with a strong design then I believe something of great power is created,” Woolton explains.
