Kara DioGuardi, songwriter and former American Idol judge, is getting ready to be a mom in a few weeks’ time. The star has confirmed the happy news in a statement to People magazine.

Though she rarely makes headlines for personal issues, Kara has never tried to hide the fact that she and husband Mike McCuddy have been struggling with serious fertility issues.

The two were married in 2009 and have been trying to get pregnant for long. After all this time, when fertility treatments and IVF attempts failed, they decided to have a baby by surrogate.

It worked, Kara happily tells the celebrity publication: in a few weeks, she and Mike will be parents to a baby boy.

“We are eagerly awaiting the healthy and happy birth of our son Greyson James Carroll McCuddy,” the 42-year-old star says for People.

She reveals that they also considered adopting at one point, but eventually settled for surrogacy.

After years of struggling with fertility issues and multiple failed IVF attempts, the couple, who wed in 2009, decided to explore other paths to parenthood — including adoption and surrogacy.

“We made a personal decision to try with a surrogate. I asked someone we knew, a friend. And on the first try, it worked,” she says.

“We’re praying for our surrogate, that she gets through this and that it’s as easy on her as it can possibly be, because she’s been a gem throughout the whole process. I’ve got two people on my mind: her and the baby. She’s given us this incredible gift,” the star adds in the same statement.

As was to be expected, Kara does not – and will probably not – reveal the identity of the surrogate slash friend. However, as these things go, she will probably be included in the family in one way or another.
