Creating an MMORPG from scratch is a tedious task, even when you have a multi million dollar publisher supporting your studio. Imagine doing the same with an all volunteer team, under the vigilant and ever watching eye of the cameras. Shattered Reality Interactive, the small independent studio making Kaos War, undergoes this very treatment as we speak. Creating Kaos is a new web video reality series that launched its first episode on Games.net last Friday. Via FiringSquad, we learn more from an interview with Damon Grow, the man leading the Kaos War effort.
"For years I was talking to my guild about making a game with epic PvE and unreal PvP to put our years of gaming
experience to use. I had this beautiful world in my head. I was a philosophy major in college so things like truth and deeper meaning came natural to me and were what led me to Kaos. I wanted to make a game world that had a soul behind it, something special - not orcs and elves. Kaos manifested in my dreams. I dream about demons and angels and the battles of creation. A world filled with ancient dread and humans ascending to their destinies, a path set before them since the beginning of time. These dreams are what lead to Kaos."
Thus, after ten years of experience as a MMO player, the evolution to game development seemed only natural. All of the greatest progress and innovation came from enthusiasts with blatant disregard for the rules, people which dared to think outside the box and do it magnificently. Then again, young teams are said to lack the necessary years of experience. Time will tell if Kaos War shall rise to their creators' expectations. After almost one year of development, Kaos War: Rise Of the Fallen recently received a MMORPG.com listing and launched a tech video showing off some of its engine's capabilities.
Six months ago, Games.net's video producer, Wendy Chan, let out a call for independents to be a part of a reality series showcasing the struggles of independents as they try and take on big corporations with nothing but fantastic ideas and determination to sustain them through the journey. It was then when Damon approached the editors to unveil Kaos War, a MMO with virtually no budget, whose goal was not only to be a straight AAA title, but the best. The combination was an instant hit, yet more extreme that initially anticipated, thus the deal was sealed and Creating Kaos was born, a weekly reality show presenting the studio's tribulations on their way to fame and glory. As Damon puts it: "It was the equivalent to being dropped naked in the African jungle, with juicy steaks tied to your legs. Get running Damon. Don't mind the lions. Have fun storming the castle!"
