An old Internet joke says that Kanye West has such a huge ego that, when he travels, he needs 2 private jets: one for it and the other for himself. According to Kanye, his ego is more like a giant marble table, so chances are it couldn’t fit in a private jet.

The rapper has never made a secret of his aspirations to go into fashion as a designer, and a recent collaboration with Adidas is proving to be his huge stepping stone. He’s promoting his collection, Originals, which debuted earlier this year at New York Fashion Week, in a new interview with the New York Times’ T Magazine.

“I have this table in my new house…”

Among other things, like Kanye’s currently favorite topics including Kim Kardashian, the celebrity game and proving the world wrong by sheer persistence and hard work, Kanye also talks about something he’s never touched upon before: his ego.

If you thought it was too big and that it was making him say and do the most insufferable things ever, well, you weren’t alone. Yeezy agrees: his ego is the rock that always drags him down, no matter how hard he fights to stay afloat - and he gives that an almost literal meaning.

“I have this table in my new house,” he says. “They put this table in without asking. It was some weird nouveau riche marble table, and I hated it. But it was literally so heavy that it took a crane to move it. We would try to set up different things around it, but it never really worked. I realized that table was my ego. No matter what you put around it, under it, no matter who photographed it, the douchebaggery would always come through.”

That Kanye, always the artiste.

Fashion is in his blood

Skimming through the interview, which is available in full at the link above, it’s typical Kanye fare: he complains that he’s being discriminated and prejudiced against and that he’s suffered for his art, and insists that designing fashion isn’t some “whim” he woke up feeling one day, because it’s been in his blood since he was a kid.

Back then, he used to dream that his mother, the late Donda West, would own a shop one day and that he could help by curating every item on sale. He would “cry” every night thinking he could grow up to be the owner of a fashion store, he reveals.

With Adidas, Kanye gets to see his dream come true. He’s had previous forays into fashion on his own, but they weren’t successful even though he was getting more exposure than any other newbie could ever dream of getting.

The Originals line is supposedly meant for the “masses” (because Kanye wants to bring beauty back to the people!), but it boasts price tags that one would not normally associate with the term “affordable.” In short, it is very expensive. Still, it’s a hit, mostly because he’s been getting massive endorsement / support from his fellow celebrities.
