No one in the fashion industry cares about them, says style maven

When Kim Kardashian finally landed the cover of Vogue magazine with a lot of help from rapper / fashion designer and fiancé Kanye West, everyone assumed that she had just legitimized her status as a style icon. Kanye has always been raving about what an icon he was, so the Kimye couple was halfway there before Vogue.

They’re still there if not actually farther down the road, style maven Kelly Cutrone tells the New York Daily News in a new interview. Kim and Kanye aka Kimye are fashion icons only in their mind, she stresses.

Cutrone is a famous publicist, fashion critic, author, and judge on America’s Next Top Model and she’s also apparently not afraid about calling a spade a spade. As Kanye continues to rant about his impact on fashion and culture and Kim is getting more praise each day for being an icon, Cutrone says that the reality is that, in the fashion industry, no one cares about these two.

“I don’t think there’s one person who really works in the fashion industry who gives a flying [expletive] about Kanye West,” she says. “I think they have no influence in the fashion world whatsoever.”

That’s not to say that they’re not sharp or trendy dressers, or that they don’t know how to best accessorize an item to make it pop. Cutrone isn’t denying that, she’s just drawing the line where Kanye and Kim would not draw one: their influence in the fashion world.

Anyone can look good in Givenchy, which is their designer of choice as of late. Givenchy has been around for decades and has been delivering luxury fashion to people with even less sense of style than these two. Looking good in Givenchy isn’t a credit to the wearer, but to the Givenchy brand, she says.

“I mean, most people who watch the Kardashians’ (reality show) can’t afford Givenchy. I don’t mean to be mean. Are (counterfeiters) on Canal St. benefiting from it? Probably, but that’s not the fashion world,” Cutrone says.

“Have Kim and Kanye had an impact on pop culture? Absolutely. Do I think that (Vogue editor-at-large) Hamish Bowles wakes up in the morning, calls (former Vogue editor-at-large) Andre Leon Talley and says, ‘Did you see those pants that Kanye was rocking on ‘SNL’?’ No,” she continues.

Those are fighting words!

Kim has never really described herself as a fashion icon or a huge fashion influence, but seeing how many times Kanye has said it in recent months, she didn’t have to. Her style has been going through drastic changes since she and the rapper started dating, to the point where it is now a carbon copy of his.

So, if Kanye sees himself as a fashion icon and he taught Kim how to dress like him, he must think she is one too. And she probably believes him when he tells her that.

Cutrone is here to shatter Kimye’s fashion dreams and aspirations.
