MTV cracks the top 100 at Alexa

Kanye West's outburst video from the 2009 Video Music Awards ceremony has managed to break almost every web user traffic record at MTV, Mashable's Adam Ostrow reports. The video portrays the self-loving egomaniac rapper disrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video. If you haven't seen it yet, you'd better stop calling yourself a new age kind of guy. An embedded version can be found in this article.

An MTV representative has disclosed for Mashable some details about its video statistics. On the night of the awards, Sunday the 13th of September, 2.7 million users used the website to get the latest news about the event. Traffic only grew the second day, on Monday, when, intrigued about Kanye's outrageous burst and some other controversial moments (as it usually happens at every MTV Awards Show), the public tuned in to watch and read the latest gossip. About 5.5 million of them did so, and they've watched about 17.9 million video streams, ranking second all-time in the website's video stream history.

Also, its Twitter Tracker app registered around two million tweets about the event and, as it was normal, Kanye was in the center of it all. Even Barack Obama got in the action, being recorded on film ripping on Kanye before an interview.

Thanks to this huge media controversy the MTV website left its usual place in the Alexa rank (between 450 and 500) and bolted to the top 100 most accessed websites. It even managed to get an 0.8% reach (0.8% of all Internet users have visited the MTV website) breaking a record in its history.

The MTV admins and legal department did an outstanding job by offering an embeddable video version for the Kanye outburst, and by keeping the video from popping up in other video sharing platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, Vuze or Metacafe, even if, shortly after, the Internet was flooded by home-made parodies of the event.
