Unlike some companies that are making all sorts of storage devices, whether aimed at enterprise users, consumers or government agencies, Kanguru is especially focusing on making its Defender Elite as secure and reliable as possible. Proving that its product is ready to play its part as a secure container for sensitive government data, Kanguru has announced that the Defender Elite has earned the FIPS 140-2 Certification and also meets Serbanes Oxley and HIPAA standards.

FIPS 140-2 is a very thorough federal security accreditation program that sets the standard for encryption modules intended for housing sensitive government information. This program is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and has been adopted by multiple governments and enterprise organizations.

The Defender Elite succeeded in passing the tests thanks to its 256-bit AES hardware encryption with limited password attempts, master password support, restricted IP range/domain support, anti-virus/malware protection and lack of need for administrative rights. The product even has a tamper-resistant design.

“As many people are aware, the recent DOD ban on flash drives has been partially lifted,” Don Brown, CEO of Kanguru Solutions, said, referring to the 15-month ban of flash drives by the U.S. Department of Defense. “During the ban, the DOD put stringent security measures in place regarding the use of portable storage devices. Working with our federal customers, we have designed our newest encrypted flash drives to meet or exceed the security needs of these new, stricter security regulations. Features like remote management, USB device control and anti-virus/malware protection, are a direct result of input from our customers and are designed to help meet organizations comply with tightening regulations.”

“With the Kanguru Defender Elite, we’ve addressed three very popular features,” Nate Cote, vice president of product management at Kanguru Solutions, said. “Strong, manageable security, reasonable cost, and ease of use for both end users and enterprise rollouts.” Kanguru will keep refining its device in order to comply with the strong data-breach laws that many states are introducing or plan to implement in the future.
