A report says that the director who was attached to a movie featuring video game characters Kane and Lynch is no longer considered by the production companies, meaning that the directorial role is now wide open and an October date for the beginning of shooting will likely be pushed back.

The Kane and Lynch movie, which is set to follow the two characters as they embarked on a high violence adventure, was set to be directed by Patrick Alessandrin, who has directed the District 13: Ultimatum sequel and had some action movie pedigree.

Now the companies involved, Nu Image, Millenium and Lionsgate need to get some one else to helm the project, with the frontrunner reportedly being Wayne Kramer of “Running Scared”, F. Gary Gray, who has directed “The Italian Job” and Antoine Fuqua, who has done “Brooklyn's Finest”.

It's not clear whether superstars Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx, who were set to play the two main characters, are still on board considering the uncertainty about the director and the start date for actual scenes being shot.

The story of the movie was set to follow Kane and Lynch as they broke out of prison and then went on to rob a big American bank.

It's not clear if the hiring of a new director would lead to the script also being reworked.

The movie based on a video game genre is still being seen as important for the future of Hollywood despite the very public failure of adaptations like Max Payne and Prince of Persia.

Recently the genre also created a hit with Resident Evil: After Life, which managed to pull out more than 200 million dollars world wide this year. Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days was launched for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC during August and offered the same due based action template with a new presentation, based on the shaky cam style.
