KaOS is a Linux distribution built from scratch that makes use of a customized KDE desktop environment and that is developed according to a rolling release model. A new version has been made available, and it's ready for download.

There aren't too many operating systems out there that don't use another OS as a base, so it's interesting to see what developers are doing with this remarkable piece of technology. Most of the famous distros use Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, or a number of other operating systems, which makes them dependent. In this case, the KaOS makers have complete freedom in what they want to accomplish so progress is easier to notice in new versions.

It's also worth mentioning that KaOS was the first distro to use the new KDE Plasma 5 desktop, but they didn't stop there. The devs continued to upgrade all the KDE components, and they have made changes to all the KDE components, like Framework and Applications. As it stands right now, this distro is probably the first one to integrate the bleeding edge from the KDE project, which is actually a hard thing to do.

KaOS is not using vanilla KDE

This is a distro developed according to a rolling release model, so all the changes are made through regular updates. The project doesn't really need intermediary releases, but it helps the new users a lot. In addition, the makers of this OS don't just implement the latest KDE packages, they also customized it considerably, to a point where it no longer resembles the original.

"As for the desktop this ISO brings all the latest of Plasma 5 (Frameworks 5.9.0, Plasma 5.2.95) and KDE Applications 15.04.0. All build on Qt 5.4.1. Many more applications are now fully ported to Qt5/Frameworks 5, among those re-added since their port became available are Skrooge, Kid3, Choqok, and Kgamma. New additions to the repositories includes applications very recently switching to Qt5; examples are Wireshark, Frescobaldi and Musescore. The Midna artwork has a complete new look and received a good dozen bug fixes to integrate much better in Plasma 5," is noted on the official website.
