The KaOS development team was proud to announce on February 24 the immediate availability for download of the KaOS 2015.02 Linux kernel-based operating system for personal computers and laptops. This is the first ever release of the KaOS Linux distribution with the next-generation KDE Plasma desktop environment, powered by the latest KDE Frameworks 5 technology.

While previous releases of KaOS used the KDE 4 desktop environment, the time has come for a change, as starting with version 2015.02, KaOS uses the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment, offering a pure and unique KDE experience to its users. However, the good news is that the distribution includes all the KDE 4 applications that have been ported to the KDE Plasma 5 desktop.

“Almost ten months ago work started to fully migrate to a Frameworks 5, Plasma 5 based distribution and with the release of Plasma 5.2.1 this migration is now deemed ready to bring a better user experience then KDE 4. From the unset of this migration there was never a plan to mix the two environments. What you will see on this ISO is a pure Plasma 5 based environment,” was stated in the official release announcement.

All KDE 4 applications that have been ported to Plasma 5 are included

Among the KDE apps included in KaOS 2015.02, we can mention the Dolphin file manager, Konqueror web browser, Okular image viewer, Calligra office suite (Kexi, Krita, and Karbon are also included), digiKam image viewer and organizer (includes Kipi plugins), Choqok instant messenger, Kdepim personal information manager, Kget download manager, Quassel IRC client, Kamoso webcam viewer, and KDE Telepathy.

Additionally, the Kdenlive video editor, Marble virtual globe and world atlas, Clementine audio player, K3b CD/DVD/BD burning software, SimpleScreenRecorder tool for recording programs and games, SMPlayer video player (includes SMPlayer YouTube Browser), QupZilla web browser, Seafile cloud storage client, KSnapshot screenshot utility, Gwenview image viewer, KPatience card sorting game, and SUSE Studio ImageWriter are also included.

The installer framework received some attention in KaOS 2015.02

The KaOS installer framework also received some attention in this new release of the independent operating system. You can download KaOS 2015.02 right now via Softpedia. The operating system is currently distributed as a 64-bit ISO image that includes software packages optimized only for 64-bit CPU architectures and boots only on modern 64-bit machines. It can be installed on UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) systems.
