The second beta of the upcoming KDE SC 4.6 has been released. KDE SC 4.6 Beta 2 is significantly more stable than the first beta and is close enough to the final version that more curious users should be able to give it a try without too much risk. That said, it's still beta software and not suited for production environments.

The focus on KDE SC 4.6 Beta 2 has been on bug fixing, about 1,200 bugs have been squashed in the two weeks since the first beta, and on the Kontact personal information manager and the transition of KDE apps to the Akonadi storage framework.

"Today, KDE has released the second beta version of what is to become KDE SC 4.6.0 in January 2011. KDE SC 4.6 Beta2 is targeted at testers and those that would like to have an early look at what's coming to their desktops and netbooks this winter," KDE announced.

"KDE is now firmly in beta mode, meaning that the primary focus is on fixing bugs and preparing the stable release. Since the release of the first beta two weeks ago 1318 bugs have been reported and 1176 bugs have been closed," the announcement read.

The KDE SC 4.6 release schedule:

· November 24, 2010 - Beta 1; · December 8, 2010 - Beta 2; · December 22, 2010 - release candidate 1; · January 5, 2011 - release candidate 2; · January 26, 2011 - final release.
