The KDE Community has announced that KDE Frameworks 5 Beta 1 has been released, marking yet another step towards the end of the old KDE Platform 4.

A new development version of KDE Frameworks 5 has been released, and more pieces are coming into play. Even so, we shouldn't dismiss KDE Platform 4, which is doing a great job for now. In fact, only a day ago, a new version was released in the stable branch of KDE, 4.12.4.

“To ease the porting of KDE Platform 4 based applications, the Frameworks team has brought the 'Porting Aids' group into existence. These Frameworks contain kdelibs4 modules and API's that are being deprecated in KF5 and are provided only to assist applications in porting to KF5,” said the developers in the announcement.

You should check out the official release notes for more details about this release. In the meantime, you can download KDE Frameworks 5 Beta 1 from the official website.

You also have to keep in mind that KDE Frameworks 5 Beta 1 is a sophisticated piece of software and you really need to know what you are doing if you decide to compile it. It features a lot of dependencies, but the provided wiki should offer some assistance.
