The KDE Community has announced that KDE Frameworks 5 Alpha 2 has been released, which marks another step towards the end of the old KDE Platform 4.

A new development version of KDE Frameworks 5 has been released, but there is nothing too spectacular about it. A lot of smaller changes have been implemented, but the most notable features are the work that's being done for Mac OS X and the implementation of Wayland.

According to the developers, kprintutils has been ditched, kwallet-framework has been renamed to kwallet, and a number of other frameworks have been added.

The previous Alpha update and the first in the series saw the introduction of kactivities and plasma-framework.

If everything goes according to plan, a Beta version should be available in April and the final version should arrive in June.

You should check the initial announcement for more details about this release. In the meantime you can download KDE Frameworks 5 Alpha from the official website.

You also have to keep in mind that KDE Frameworks 5 Alpha 2 is a sophisticated piece of software and you really need to know what you are doing if you decide to compile it. It features a lot of dependencies, but the provided wiki should offer some assistance.
