The KDE Project developers have just released the first update for the 4.14 version for Applications and Platform, and they are getting ready to close this particular branch.

The KDE developers have released an update for KDE 4.14, which is actually the last version in the series. It will soon be replaced by KDE Frameworks 5, KDE Plasma, and KDE Applications. The entire system is now much more modular and the projects have been decoupled. The devs won't have to follow the same version number, so there will be some misunderstandings in the future.

The current KDE direction, followed by the 4.14.1 version as well, will be modified and users will have to get used to another kind of experience. Fortunately, all of the applications will remain basically the same, but they will have to adapt to the new design paradigm.

What's new in KDE 4.14.1

"Today KDE released updates for its Applications and Development Platform, the first in a series of monthly stabilization updates to the 4.14 series. This release contains only bugfixes and translation updates, providing a safe and pleasant update for everyone. More than 50 recorded bugfixes include improvements to Personal Information Management suite Kontact, Umbrello UML Modeller, the document viewer Okular, the vocabulary learning application Parley and the file manager Dolphin," note the devs in the announcement.

According to the changelog, the arrows are now aligned properly when the "snap to grid" is activated, Ark no longer shows the file's name in the infopanel even when it isn't opened correctly, KOrganizer is now showing all recurring meetings, the summary now shows upcoming events, zooming in now works properly on certain documents for Okular, a Haskell indentation segmentation fault has been fixed, and the sound icon is now removed when there is no sound.

Also, the cursor now jumps to the end of a replaced string, the number of notes is now displayed in the system tray by default, a SEGV crash that occurred when umbrello was opening AIXM files has been fixed, and Kmail now remembers the settings of a custom theme ("header") for the email preview.

Where to get it

KDE Applications 4.14.x will continue to receive updates until November, and it will have three different point releases. The last version in the series will be KDE 4.14.3, so the end of support for this branch will arrive pretty fast, in just a few months’ time.

More details about the changes, fixes, and new features of this build can be found in the official announcement. Also, you can download the latest KDE Applications and Development Platform 4.14.1 sources right now from the official website.
