A new version of KDE Applications has been released

The KDE Project developers announce that KDE Applications 15.04 RC has been released and is now ready for testing. It will be a while until this is ready for shipment, but until then we'll be able to take it for a spin.

The former organization of the KDE project is no more, and now users will notice that it has been split into several working parts, KDE Frameworks 5, KDE Plasma, and KDE Applications, to be more precise. It's a bold move from the developer, and it requires some adjustments from the users who were closely monitoring the version numbers of the launched packages.

There are already a number of distributions out there that have adopted the new KDE packages, not only the desktop part. It will take a while until this particular version of the KDE Applications reaches the majority of the users, but that's not unusual. In fact, the KDE Applications 15.04 has also received a few members, like KDE Telepathy and Kdenlive.

KDE Applications 15.04 RC is ready for testing

As you can imagine, installing KDE Applications is not exactly a simple thing to do. Unless you really know what you are doing, it's not really advisable to do anything about it. It's a much better idea to wait until it reaches the repositories for your particular distro.

"KDE released the release candidate of the new versions of KDE Applications. With dependency and feature freezes in place, the KDE team's focus is now on fixing bugs and further polishing. With the various applications being based on KDE Frameworks 5, the KDE Applications 15.04 releases need a thorough testing in order to maintain and improve the quality and user experience. Actual users are critical to maintaining high KDE quality, because developers simply cannot test every possible configuration. We're counting on you to help find bugs early so they can be squashed before the final release," said the devs.

If you don't find the packages available in the repositories, you can always download the source from the official website and compile it yourself.
