The KDE Project has announced earlier today, October 2nd, the immediate availability for download of the second maintenance release of KDE Software Compilation 4.9.

KDE SC 4.9.2 is the second of four point releases for the KDE 4.9 desktop environment, until KDE 4.10 will take its place as the next major upgrade, and it comes with general stability improvements and bug fixes.

Among the improved apps in KDE 4.9.2, we can mention Dolphin, Kontact Suite, and Plasma. A great number of applications were also improved in the development platform of KDE.

These updates are the second in a series of monthly stabilization updates to the 4.9 series. 4.9.2 updates bring many bugfixes and translation updates on top of the latest edition in the 4.9 series and are recommended updates for everyone running 4.9.1 or earlier versions.

As the release only contains bugfixes and translation updates, it will be a safe and pleasant update for everyone. KDE’s software is already translated into more than 55 languages, with more to come,” was stated in the official release announcement.

KDE Software Compilation 4.9.2 is translated into more than 60 languages and it offers a modern and easy-to-use desktop environment for Linux-based operating systems.

Major Linux distributions (Kubuntu, openSUSE, etc.) will upgrade their KDE packages to KDE SC 4.9.2 in the next days, so keep an eye on the Update Manager utility if you are anxious to install it.

In the meantime, hardcore Linux users (Gentoo, Arch, etc.) can download KDE 4.9.2 sources right now from Softpedia, and compile them.

If you are still using the old KDE 4.8 desktop environment, we strongly suggest to upgrade to the KDE Software Compilation 4.9 release as it has amazing new features, updated apps and overall improvements, as we announced back in August.

Every part of the KDE desktop is configurable except one: system tray icons.

The thing people keep an eye on is the one thing you cant make bigger.
Worse, theyve gone to monochrome so its even less distinguishable.
EVERY SINGLE senior person Ive installed Linux has said "The icons are too small, is it possible to make them bigger?"

The size of icons is limited because of legacy limitations. Old protocol for tray icons has fixed size. KDE Plasma also supports new protocol, which has scalability of icons and icons are themable and there is strict separation of logic and presentation so you could present tray in a completely innovative way. Unfortunately only KDE Plasma supports this new protocol, so manj app developers don't support this new protocol and if in tray there are a mix of apps that use new protocol and old protocol they would have different size. That's why the size of icons is set to fixed by default until majority of app developers start to support new tray protocol. As for the color of icons, well as they are thmable (at least the ones from apps that support new tray protocol) you can change the look of icons.

Thanks Jure....

I want to change the size of the icons for my parents and inlaws and couldnt find any reason or explanation.

I guess we will have to wait until more devs support the new protocol.

Thanks for explaining it, this has been bugging me since KDE4.3
