The KDE community announced a few minutes ago, in a press release, the immediate availability of the final version of KDE (K Desktop Environment) 4.2 a.k.a. "The Answer." The KDE 4 desktop environment ships with many packages, including web development applications, educational tools, administrative programs and more, all of which are available in over 50 languages. Everyone currently using KDE 4.1.4 is advised to update to the new version (see below for installation details). For those of you who can't wait to update/install KDE 4.2 or just want to see what's new in it, we suggest the KDE 4 Live CD. Download it right now from Softpedia.

"With KDE 4.2 we are seeing the positive results of that beginning. Only one year has passed since 4.0.0 was released and the embryonic concepts have been blossoming. Everywhere we look, we see substantial results. 62,460 commits were made by over 627 contributors to the KDE project during the six month KDE 4.2 development cycle." - said the KDE team in the official release announcement.

Highlights of KDE 4.2.0:

· New and improved applets
· New system and application notifications
· Efficient and smooth window management
· New breathtaking desktop effects
· Easier configuration
· Tasks can be grouped
· File manager-like desktop powered by Plasma
· New and improved tools

KDE 4.2.0 also adds support for many new languages, such as Arabic, Basque, Icelandic, Romanian, Hebrew, Tajik and various Indian languages (Bengali India, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Maithili). You can find a more detailed list of the features and enhancements in KDE 4.2 on the official webpage. For your viewing pleasure we've just compiled a nice screenshot tour. Enjoy!

Yawn. So is this apparent production release going to be relabelled alpha, in a month or two after a couple of dozen major bugs surface?

At the same time, it seems a helpful person is busy trying to give every single KDE program a rating of 4/5 or better. A hard-working somebody, as ratings have appeared in cases even before enough time has passed for a new program to be downloaded and tried. Microsoft used to pay people to do that for Windows and Windows programs.

From your view i can understand that you are a GNOME user. KDE is a much better desktop environment compared to GNOME. Consider f-spot to Digikam, f-spot is not a match compared to digikam. The same goes when Amarok is compared to any GTK+ application that is used on GNOME. Gnome doesnt even have its own Office Suite, We have Koffice aswell. And GNOME doesnt have a web browser, thats why they have to use firefox. I tell you what if you dont like it then dont use it.

Right, lets get this sorted.

1. Gnome does have it's own web browser, if you didn't know. It is called Epiphany.

2. Gnome does have an office suite, and it is called Gnome Office.

3. I clasify KDE as Krap Desktop Enviorment. Gnome is sleak, fast, clutter free, and above all it is user-friendly.

Somehow, i dought that you have used Gnome before. At least it doesen't look weird like KDE does. Plus, there are lots more themes for Gnome. Anyone aggree?

I've been reasonably happy with KDE 4.1, and will try out 4.2. But I'm not encouraged by the update process - it should be in the usual repositories if it's a fully stable release, not an 'experimental' one.
