I'm sure all of you know
Justin Timberlake, whether you want it or not, but what you probably don't know is that the American pop singer, dancer, producer, actor (plus all his other "titles") will soon have a new reality show on MTV, dubbed "The Phone".
Inspired by a Dutch show created by Park Lane Productions and created by Justin himself in collaboration with FremantleMedia North America, "The Phone" will have its
premiere in the fall of 2008. What's the show about? Well, according to Timberlake's
official website, MTV's viewers will have in "The Phone" a "reality game show" that puts participants to hard challenges. On each of the show's editions, held once a week, contestants will have to answer calls from "strategically hidden cell phones" (of an unspecified brand) that are ringing in two opposite corners of a metropolitan city. After answering the phone(s), the participants have to decide if they want to take on a "race" through the city, for a big cash price (unspecified, again), while all of their moves are being observed from a helicopter. If this sounds like an action movie, the show apparently tries to be something of this kind.
"Genre-busting and reinvention is at the core of what we do, and The Phone does just that. We're turning the reality competition format on its head and plunging the contestants into a real life Bourne Identity - not just in the tone and creative, but also in terms of the visual style and pacing", says Tony Disanto, Executive Vice President, Programming and Series Development, quoted on Timberlake's website. "Each week will be an action packed mini-movie. When you watch, your heart will pound as hard as the contestants'. This is Popcorn TV!"
It's not clear yet if "The Phone" will be aired only in the US or also in other countries where MTV is present, but I guess viewers will find out about this when the show makes its debut.
Love it or hate it, the ex-colleague of Britney Spears (at the "New Mickey Mouse" kids club), ex-member of 'N Sync, ex-lover of Alyssa Milano and Cameron Diaz, will be coming this fall with "The Phone". We'll see then if it's a worth-watching show or not.
