14 DAY TRIAL // If you too rolled your eyes when you saw Justin Bieber’s first ads as a Calvin Klein underwear model (gallery) and you thought that he was doing the brand a disservice or at least that he wasn’t the best model they could have come up with, you’re not alone.
Albeit subjective to the maximum, Rhea Wahlberg, Mark’s wife, is of the same opinion: there is only one “original” Calvin Klein underwear model and he’s the best. No, his name is not Justin Bieber.
Mark was the first and the best
Shortly after the CK ads emerged online, Rhea took to her Twitter to say two very important things: the first one was that the amount of Photoshop on Bieber in the pics was insane; the other was that he couldn’t hold a candle to the original, Mark. Or Marky Mark as he was known at the time.
Justin has never made a secret of his admiration for the actor or how badly he wanted to become a CK model himself, so when the ads came out, the world was quick to compare the two.
Bieber’s fans, of course, said that he was the best CK model of all time, but those with no particular affinity for his music pointed out that, as they say, Mark did it first and he did it best.
“My baby was the 1st and the best. And not to mention... wow the retouching,” Rhea posted on Twitter. “Just gonna say this.....did u ever hear the song #aintnuthinliketherealthingbaby.”
Fighting off upset fans
Some Beliebers can be very vicious when they believe something someone has said wronged their idol, as Rhea probably found out soon after she posted these things on Twitter. When the media began running headlines like “Rhea Blasts Justin Bieber” or “Rhea Rips into Justin Bieber,” the backlash against her must have become even harsher.
She’s handling it all with grace. At first, she told fans that she believed, because she was married to Mark, that “the original is best, is all” but since that too was interpreted as a diss, she called it like it was: she was married to Mark, so naturally she thought he was the most amazing man out there, no offense to Justin.
She even had to tweet clarifications about how much she and her whole family loved Bieber, and how she thought he did a great job with Calvin Klein. However, she added, she still thought Mark was the better CK model.
