The development team behind Just Cause 2, the open-world action game which impressed with its freedom and its complex game world, has revealed that it is aiming to become the best studio when it comes to open-world game on the next generation of home consoles.

Christofer Sundberg, the leader of the Avalanche Studios, has stated, “We are set on becoming the best open world developer. That’s our ultimate goal. It’s a very competitive genre. Rockstar is more of a phenomenon than a competitor. What we can offer to the genre is diversity, which very few other open world developers can.”

The developer says that the approach for the next devices from Sony and Microsoft will be similar to that taken on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, with big open areas filled with activities and with content that is fun and crazy.

Christofer Sundberg added, “Open world game players are anarchists, just like us. It’s funny. When you tell a player in one of our games to go right, they always go left. Planning around that mindset, that you can never predict what the player will do, and always counting on the player to break your game, is quite interesting.”

At the moment, Avalanche Studios is known to be working on three high-profile titles that should be launched during 2014 on the PC and new consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

It’s not clear whether the Avalanche titles will also be launched on the Nintendo-made Wii U.

Two of the games are based on licenses and one is an originally concept, probably Just Cause 3.

Just Cause 2 gave the player a number of tools, including a grappling hook and a parachute that defies the laws of physics, and allows them to use them to explore a huge environment while also doing a variety of missions.
