Before an enthusiastic Romanian crowd, Jurgen Melzer clinched his 1st ever ATP title. BCR Open Romania gave the Austrian the perfect opportunity to get his first important win inside the ATP Tour. Despite some of the best clay specialists being present at the start of the competition - Tursunov, Serra, Mathieu, Moya - Melzer managed to get through the week in style.

The Austrian had a much easier way into the
final than his Sunday opponent, Italian Filippo Volandri. Melzer only played one set against Paul-Henri Mathieu in the semifinals, since the Frenchman had to leave the court with a broken ankle.

On the other hand, Volandri met both Carlos Moya and last year's winner Florent Serra in the previous rounds, and didn't drop a set against them. It was the main reason why the Italian was looked as the final's favorite.

It wasn't like that, though, since Melzer managed an impressive tennis throughout the match. The Austrian alternated powerful forehands with classy short-balls and broke his opponent twice in the opener. He clinched the first set 6-1.

The second saw a much more determined Volandri entering the court, struggling to hang on to his serve. On the other hand, Melzer kept his serve comfortably and broke the Italian when most needed. The 11th game was proven crucial for the match, as Volandri lost his serve and had no response to Melzer's soon after.

The Austrian was delighted with his win, thanking his coach & family for encouraging him throughout his career. Melzer also won the 44.000 euros prize and will seek another victorious weekend in the Davis Cup, against Maexico (22-24th of September).
