Julian Gollop is best known for creating the original XCOM concept, but with the revival of that title being handled by Firaxis, the developer is aiming to remake his very first title with a number of modern mechanics under the name Chaos Reborn.

The game will be centered around a duel between two wizards that can use a variety of spells and summoned creatures to attack each other and the entire experience will ask gamers to evaluate the tactical battlefield and find the best way to take their enemy out.

Gollop tells VG247 that, “There are a lot of random elements to the game from the summoning to the combat, so you can’t really rely 100% on anything. This can allow inexperienced players to become more talented players, but on the other hand there are a lot of tactics to consider. In every decision you make in the game, there’s a better decision and there’s a worse decision based on your evaluation of the probabilities and so on.”

Wizards need to summon creatures in order to be competitive, but they can also bluff by calling in a simulated version of a monster, which can do damage, but which can be eliminated through the use of a spell that’s always available.

The developer says that the other spells that wizards can use will include stuff like Gooey Blobs, shadow words, magical direct attacks, magic castles, Fountain of Life, plague and more.

Each turn, gamers will have to decide whether they want to try and directly assault their enemy, whether they can be better served by bringing in more creatures or if they should worry about their own safety.

The battlefield also constantly moves between Order and Chaos and the state of the world can influence the chance of a particular summoning or spell to succeed or fail.

Gollop adds, “There’s a terrain-altering spell called Volcano which will cause the ground to rise up and spew out some lava, and the Earthquake which can cause part of the map to split away, causing a little bit of a gap. There’s general area-of-effect spells, and some positional spells like Radiant Blast which shoots out bolts in six directions from your wizard.”

Those who like the mechanics that Julian Gollop is using for Chaos Reborn can still back the title via its official Kickstarter page.

The title does not yet have an official launch date.
