Jose Mourinho can't be too thrilled about his team's last performance at Middlesbrough. For the first time since he came to Chelsea, the team lost a Premiership match in the season's first rounds. More, the loss came just days after his side crushed Manchester City at Stanford Bridge 3-0.
Only one positive thing can be observed in Chelsea's last night match. Ukrainian Andryi Shevchenko scored his first Premiership goal for Chelsea. Other than that, Mourinho's defense was
more preoccupied with going on the attack than keeping the ball outside their penalty area.
Having all that in mind and losing the game in the dying seconds, the Portuguese blamed his players for their poor attitude and lack of concentration.
"I know why we were champions twice and the players know why as well - and it was not with this attitude that's for sure. The attitude lost us that game. Football is for 90 minutes, not 75 minutes or 80. Overall their attitude was stronger than ours and we didn't deserve any more than we got", said Mourinho after the game, according to "The Sun" newspaper.
He also dismissed allegations that he blamed referees for his team's failure: "We cannot blame the ref, the opponents or bad luck. We must blame ourselves".
"The performance was not good and we didn't play well. We were too passive and we only got a reaction after their first goal. I'm not disappointed. I am disappointed when we deserve to win and we don't. When my team doesn't deserve to win and they don't win then I am not disappointed. It was a good example of how not to play away in the Premiership. I think Boro deserved to win and I've got no complaints", concluded Mourinho.
