14 DAY TRIAL // Starting as a Mambo spin-off, the groundbreaking Joomla 1.0.X series has been pulled off the market after four years in the top CMSs on the web. The Joomla community has decided to stop all development tasks, security upgrades and community support for the first version of the Joomla CMS, the 1.0.X series, and concentrate all its forces on the new release, the 1.6.X family.
Launched in September 2005, Joomla 1.0.X was born after a split in the Mambo project, at first, many calling it a bad spin-off of a good technology. After a quick success on Joomla Forge with countless downloads, the project made a name for itself and slowly grew in popularity.
In October 2005, shortly after its launch, because of the similarities between Joomla 1.0.X and Mambo 4.5.3, an announcement was made for a newer version, the Joomla 1.1.X branch. In January 2008, the 1.1 version was released under the Joomla 1.5 name, a revolutionary CMS that made website building a child's play. Throughout its career, Joomla reached more than ten million downloads, and made its way in about 0.7% of the sites on the Internet, as countless are running a Joomla CMS.
The success of the Joomla 1.5 series led to the demise and deprecation of the old 1.0.X family. Slowly, the number of free extensions for Joomla 1.0 went down, reaching at this moment a 27% percentage from the total number of extensions on Joomla's official website.
After reaching more than 1.5 million downloads for Joomla 1.0, in October 2008, the Joomla community announced that, due to massive development work on the new ACL feature for Joomla 1.6, no new security upgrades and stable updates would be made starting August 2009 to the 1.0.X series.
A few days ago, on Joomla's official website, the 1.0.X series was removed from the download section, and through a post on the community blog, the last download links to the legacy versions were made public.
