Talking about his upbringings, Steve Jobs, and Apple in general, Chief Designer Jonathan Ive told Vanity Fair this week that the Apple Watch was the next logical step for the company.

He didn’t spend too much time explaining how Apple finally decided to make the thing. Instead, he explained why the wrist was the best new place to put a gadget on. And he also doesn’t regard it as a gadget per se.

“Always been interested in watches,” said Ive. “At first watches were designed before pockets were invented, so they were hung around necks. Then the pocketwatch happened. There were watches worn on fingers in the 17th century.”

He continued, saying that “For reasons of function, for reasons of utility, it ended up on the wrist. And you'll notice it stayed there for over 100 years. It has now an historical gravitas. It's a really great place to be able to glance quickly at information. When we started working on it, it seemed like a natural place for technology to end up.”

The Apple Watch is scheduled to land in stores in early 2015, but Apple won’t give us a definitive date. It seems only natural, considering the manufacturing hurdles they have each and every year. Are you getting one when the thing comes out? Sound off in the comments.
