A lawsuit has been filed in Colorado, with plaintiffs seeking the disclosure of the JonBenét Ramsey murder indictment files.

According to Huffington Post, the suit has been filed by a reporter with the Boulder Daily Camera and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

While the Daily Camera is not part of the suit, reporter Charlie Brennan has been named as one of the people requesting the files.

The documents refer to the indictment of JonBenét Ramsey's parents, which was never signed by the district attorney at the time.

“The plaintiffs believe... that the indictment is a criminal justice record that reflects official action by the grand jury, and accordingly that it is subject to mandatory disclosure upon request,” the complaint reads.

The parents were to be charged with "Knowing and reckless" child abuse, a Class 2 felony that carries a maximum penalty of 48 years in jail.

Ramsey, a 6-year-old from Boulder who gained recognition by competing in child beauty pageants, was killed in 1996.

Her remains were found in the basement of her home, and forensic examinations revealed that she had suffered blunt force trauma before being strangled.

Even as her parents never received a call from an abductor, a ransom note was recovered at the scene. It mentioned parties “that represent a foreign faction.”

Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter rejected the indictment of the girl's parents at the time, citing a lack of evidence.

“I and my prosecution task force believe we do not have sufficient evidence to warrant a filing of charges against anyone who has been investigated,” he said.

A Grand Jury had voted to indict John and Patsy Ramsey in 1999, on negligence charges.

“We didn't know who did what, [...] but we felt the adults in the house may have done something that they certainly could have prevented, or they could have helped her, and they didn't,” a juror stated.
