Remember the days when you went to the arcade and fought waves and waves of planes, ships and submarines in your trusted World War II fighter, with the occasional boss encounter at the end of the
level and your eyes always darting to the side of the screen to see how many lives and how many bombs you had left? Well, those days will soon be upon us again as Capcom is getting ready to launch 1942: Joint Strike.

The game is developed by Backbone Entertainment and is a throwback to all the scrolling arcade shooter titles you've ever played. The action is viewed from a top down perspective and your mission is simply to get to the end of the level while masses of enemies discharge huge amounts of ammunition on you. The game might look like 2D, but most of the art is created in 3D and all the effects look very nice. The aspect is very close to World War II, but there are power-ups and weapons which clearly were not available in 1942, like lasers and atomic bombs.

The game can be played in wide screen, if you wish, and features two player co-op to make things more interesting. There are four difficulty settings designed to accommodate even those with little to no arcade experience.

Capcom is really making a habit of creating such remakes of classical titles and, judging by the success enjoyed by games like Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 and Bionic Commando Rearmed, we might see more arcade revivals in the future.

1942: Joint Strike will be available for download for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. On July 23, the game will be on Xbox Live and on July 24, the PlayStation Network will also host it. The title will cost 9.99 dollars.
